This content-based course introduces students to key concepts that will help them become engaged political citizens of our contemporary global world. Students will learn about the tradition of modern Enlightenment thought that continues to shape ethical and political debate and decision-making both in Canada and around the world. Through lectures, online discussions, and in-depth feedback on written work, students will learn: how to identify various political and ethical concepts such as liberalism, conservatism, democracy, capitalism, and communism; how to compare and contrast the different opinions of various modern thinkers on each of these concepts; how to apply these concepts to concrete real-world examples taken from contemporary news media; how to develop and articulate their own opinions on these concepts in relation to those thinkers; and how to be ethical scholars by practicing academic integrity. By the end of the course students will have experience using Chicago style, writing an academic paper, and applying Modern Enlightenment concepts to real-world examples. Exclusions: CT121
